BCC and the Quest for the Cailleach

In the Burial Chamber

In the Burial Chamber

A curse had been placed upon the land by the evil Cor O’na causing the inhabitants to suffer from an ailment of the lungs and preventing them from visiting nearby villagers in their homes.  It was a clear cold day that 6 brave members of Clan BCC decided to go searching for the Cailleach to ask for her aid in breaking the terrible curse.  The group was led by High King Jamie, accompanied by Matthew the Mushroom Mage (to protect them for sorcery), Ronan Slieveslayer and Kyle Cruxreacher (two warriors of great renown) and Eva of the Enchanted East (who brought arcane knowledge from her lands).  Finally, there was Seanchaí* Lisa, who had consulted the Oracle Go O’gle for the path to follow and lead them to the Cailleach’s lair.

The Beautiful Views on the way up Gullion

Go O’gle told Seanchaí Lisa that the Cailleach had made her home in the burial chamber on the summit of Slieve Gullion and so the group set off up the forest road for the peak.  After some lovely views on the way up to the summit they were shrouded in mist at the top and were buffeted by gales.  They searched for the entrance to the Cailleach’s house, and almost missed it, but just as they were about to lose hope and return, Ronan Slieveslayer spotted it and led them forward.  Their search was in vain, however, the Cailleach was not home, so they broke their fast in the shelter of the burial chamber.

Upon leaving the burial chamber, a familiar figure that they thought had been banished to the drumlins by the great Cor O’na appeared from the mists, Vicky Strongshield.  She led the group down a treacherous path to the Cailleach’s lake, which the Cailleach had cursed to age anyone who swam in it and turn their hair white.  Kyle considered bathing in the lake, just like his predecessor Fionn MacCumhail, as his hair needed rebleaching; however, after realising he would have the unfortunate side effect of looking old Kyle decided not to go for it.  The group slipped and slid down to drier ground leaving the peak of Gullion behind them and returned home, unsuccessful in their mission.  But as the weather was nice they decided to enjoyed the lovely south Armagh scenery as they made their way back to their base.  As they began to weary they tried to harness some noble steeds, but they were having none of it and a strange little man told them of how the Cailleach only appeared at the solstice, when the sun entered the chamber at sunset.

The Giant’s Dinner Table

The Giant’s Dinner Table

After a refreshment break and smarting from their failure to find the Cailleach, they decided that they would next go in search of a giant, as they had heard there was one’s lair nearby.  Their path first led them through a faerie village, but unfortunately they didn’t see any of the fair folk.  They stopped by the giant’s dinner table but moved on quickly before Eva of the Enchanted East and Seanchaí Lisa became his dinner.

They then found themselves in the faerie labyrinth where strange faces appeared at windows, which may have been our fellow questers.  They almost found themselves trapped in the dark, but eventually found the light and safety. Perhaps the faeries were present… Back on more well-trodden ground, Eva of the Enchanted East made the first recorded ascent of Cailleach’s Nose Eliminate and passed the giant’s espresso cups, which he had just left strewn around the forest.  Even Kyle Cruxreacher would be satisfied by one of these cups of coffee.

They found themselves back where they started, having seen no sign of the Giant’s Lair.  They counted themselves lucky that this was the only mischief the faeries had wrought on them this day and decided that that was enough adventures for one day and waved a final goodbye to the faeries before heading back home.

Our Journey

Our Journey

The Misty Mountains of Mourne; A BCC Adventure

r1.png

“A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship. But it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the age of Men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we Hike!”

The year 2020. The 15th sunrise of the month November.  A terrible winter breeze blew. Ferocious rain pelted down from the heavens.  10 brave orders of BCC members slung their packs and steadied their walking staffs. Their quest; to tackle the ancient mountains of Mourne.

Our Chief Scout and Wind Runner Rónán laid out the ancient map scrolls. He passed one scroll to our leader and Bondsmith Ser Jamie. Using the ancient Earth magic of compass we set our trajectory into the forests of Tollymore.

The protection of the forest was short lived. We soon broke out into the wilds of the Pot of Legawherry. We skirted the unnamed hill and forged through the rain and wind to the old wall that marked the next leg of our journey. Stoneward Kyle took point and led the fellowship through raging rivers and treacherous terrain. Nearing the summit of Shan Slieve our fellowship was to fail.

Wise Elsecaller Niall along with our leader Jamie broke off half the party towards easier terrain.

“End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Down is just another path, one that eventually we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it. White shores, and beyond, a far green forest under a swift sunrise."

So 5 orders of BCC Radiants remained to complete the quest. Onto the summit of Shan Slieve we went; fighting into the wind. Every step a chasm to span. It felt like even the Spren of nature were fighting against us. Edge Dancer Eva in her cloak of majestic blue glided over the summit and onto the final elevation of Slieve Commedagh, closely followed by Robyn of the Sky Breakers and Light Weaver Lisa. With Rónán and Kyle in tow, we all made it to the ancient fortress on the summit for a brief respite from the wind and what was now sleet. It felt like Odium himself had summoned an Everstorm to stop our quest. The mountains were bursting with new rivers. Streams became torrents. Ancient fords became uncrossable.

With a renewed focus we battled from the shelter and took along the ancient Mourne Wall over Corragh. We ran, we slipped we prevailed. Over Slievenaglogh. We bounded over the terrain for something visceral; an urge to return to regain the warmth of our failing bodies. We crossed the wall on the old fabled stile. Down the mountain side along the now many tributaries of Shimna. The Trassey track called us home. Step by step, gate by gate. Paths dissolved into rivers under our feet. One last frightful river crossing stood in our way. The once dry boots of Wind Runner Rónán even had to succumb to the Spren of the water.

The long walk home continued on. A shrine of kings couldn’t distract us from our goal. Finishing though the dense Tollymore woods we came upon the Cathedral of the Outdoor Centre. For victory and warmth. We managed to slip off our wet cowls and dawn dry majestic robes. Ready for our next great adventure to reaffirm our oaths…

“Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination.”

Outdoor Meets

Despite the colder weather coming in we are kicking off the outdoor meets again. Currently, we are planning on to hold them on the first and third weekend of each month. This will be anything from a walk in the Mournes, a climb at a crag or even a meet up at one of the indoor walls outside of Belfast. Due to the coming winter season this will mostly be walks, which are also easy to maintain social distancing.

This could be a weekend trip but will mostly be day trips. Because of weather the day we go out could vary on the weekend or we might just go to an indoor wall instead, when they reopen again.

Events will be posted here and on the Facebook group, so keep an eye at for the specifics of the events. Make you sure you have Membership up to date or you won’t be allowed on the trips!

Hope to see you soon outdoors!

Outdoor Partnership

Members of the club can take advantage of heavily discounted courses provided through the Outdoor Partnership. Courses that would normally be quite expensive are available for as little as £20 per-day. There are courses available in climbing, mountain-skills and first-aid.

To take part

  1. Have a look at the courses available (click here)

  2. Register on the Outdoor Partnership website (click here)

  3. Send an email to info@belfastclimbingclub.co.uk, as you will require approval from the committee to take up this offer

Regular Monthly Socials

We are starting regular club socials each month. All welcome!

EVERY 2nd THURSDAY 8pm: club time-ish.

Sadly, we don’t get to see each other at the Ozone wall anymore. So we decided to meet online instead. If you want to hear updates on fellow BCC friends’ lives, join for this fun mid-week chat with climbing ethusiasts. If you are new to the club (or just interested in climbing in Northern Ireland), this is a great way to meet people.

EVERY LAST FRIDAY 8pm: drinks&"organized fun."

If you usually leave the room when the expression "organized fun" is mentioned, do not fear. There will be much improvisation and very disorganized climbing banter involved. The Friday social will be different each month and will include things like talks, quizzes, and possibly even outdoor activities in Belfast. Any suggestions for activies are welcome.

Links to these events will be shared via Club Facebook page and WhatsApp group. Feel free to also contact the club at info@belfastclimbingclub.co.uk and we will send you the details.

BCC on Radio Ulster's Vinny Hurrell Show and upcoming AGM

On Friday 11 September, Kyle, Vicky and Eva were featured on Radio ulster’s Vinny Hurrell show and gave some brilliant answers on why they climb and what they get from the club.

Have a listen here (available until 8 October). You can hear Kyle at 9:12, Vicky at 16:38 and Eva at 40:50.

We will be hosting our AGM online in early October (more details to follow).
