BCC had its inaugural Christmas dinner on 9 December at Meelmore Lodge, in the heart of the Mournes. 14 people (and Gabe the mountain dog) made the snow-bound trek to Meelmore and enjoy a three course feast put on by the hosts. After the meal we retreated to the living room with a fire and were thoroughly entertained by hide and seek with Gabe, Vicky’s enforced fun and Paul’s inability to count to four. Several hardy folk opted to camp either in a tent or in the cars while the more decadent amongst us had a room booked for the evening.
Sunday providing spectacular Winter conditions and perfect visibility in the hills and so we went for a dander on Bearnagh with an eclectic mix of gear – Walking boots, B3s, wellies, crampons, ice grippers, a toboggan…
Fantastic views were enjoyed as far as the Sperrins and Galloway. This was Ben’s first visit to the Mournes and they’ve now effectively been ruined for him as he’s unlikely to see conditions as good for a long time!
Special mention to Lisa for carrying the toboggan up Bearnagh and making good use of it (without going over the side)!
A great weekend and no doubt the beginning of a tradition! Special thanks to Meelmore lodge for feeding us and putting us up – the food and accommodation were great, the staff friendly and the location superb! Thanks for sorting the weather for us too!
