Scrambling Trip Sligo

The soggy cold Irish winter does not mean an end to all adventures! As a solution to the winter blues and to help prepare us for a fun spring and summer ahead please join us on a scrambling trip to sligo (all the fun of rocks with the benefit of being able to sneak quite a few extra layers on!)

We intend to split into two groups for both days; below are some of the options…

Saturday 25th February

  • King’s Mountain: Annach Re Mhor: This is a unique adventure into a “Lord of the Rings-esque” landscape (see picture for this event!). It traverses a deep fissure of the mountain and includes an abseil.

  • King’s Mountain: Pinnacle Gully: This gully srcamble leads up through a cave which dramatically opens up onto the hillside allowing the summit to be reached. Embrace your inner troglodyte!

Sunday 26th February

  • Benwiskin and Diarmuid & Grainne’s Cave: This route ascends the steep, narrow NE ridge of benwiskin with one of the highest caves in Ireland as an optional extra.

  • Glenade: Eagle’s Rock: The huge shark’s fin of Eagle’s Rock in Glenade, standing clear of the Truskmore Massif, makes a delightful day out to admire the tottering limestone towers, gullies, cliffs and cascades.

For more information on the routes above please refer to “Scrambles in Ulster and Connacht” by Alan Tees (from which much of my description is taken). Or just google. The relevant OS map is OS16.

Please note that a helmet and harness will be required for this trip (as well as abseil skills) if you are intending to do Annach Re Mhor (see above). All other potential excursions require no specialist equipment asides from good shoes and warm clothes.

We will be staying at the Benwiskin Centre (http://www.benwiskincentre.com/) and the price will be £30 per person. This cost will cover accomodation, an evening meal, milk, tea and coffee. Please note that this cost does not include transport. While transport will be organised by the club it will be the responsibility of each individual driver (estimated at about £15-20pp) to collect dues.

Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. This trip is members only. Any questions about this trip please contact vicky@belfastclimbing.co.uk.
